2023 – Intentions

Intentions…I’ve heard this word a lot in 2023 so far and it’s really speaking to me. Instead of resolutions, I usually talk about goals for the year. This year, I’m talking about my intentions for the year.

I listened to an excellent Daily Calm meditation from Tamara Levitt early this year and it really struck me. I can’t find the meditation to link but the basic premise is that an intention doesn’t “lock” you as much as a more rigid goal or resolution might. I like the sound of that: setting intentions this year.

I also believe that you need to be kind to yourself and set reasonable intentions and goals. Setting an aggressive goal and failing can be really hard to handle mentally. Intending to do something and not doing it seems much lighter if you fail or change your mind.

So here is a quick list of my intentions in 2023:

  • I intend to be nicer to myself in 2023! And when I find me being hard on myself, I’m going to nice to myself about it. I believe that some of my other intentions for the year help me with this one as well!
  • I intend to find balance in 2023! This means balancing mental health practices with fitness activities with personal activities with social engagements and with downtime. Phew! I get exhausted just thinking about all of the stuff I need to balance!
  • I intend to be grateful and be diligent with gratitude journaling. This definitely helps me be nicer to myself. By being grateful in 2023, I intend to be thankful about the good things in my life. And by focusing on the good things in my life, I’m hopeful that it’ll be easier to be nicer to myself and enjoy life.
  • I intend to be more intentional with meditation in 2023! I intend to get back to meditation every other day this year. Meditation is so peaceful for me but I just don’t seem to make time for it. I intend to make time for meditation rather than trying to fit it in at the end of the night. But if I fit it in at the end of the night, I’m going to be nice to myself about it. Meditation and self reflection is incredibly empowering for me and helps keep me mentally healthy. I’m really hoping to find more inner calm this year and thus experience more outer calm.
  • I intend to continue to be focus on fitness but try to find balance. This means working hard but remembering to take time off and enjoy downtime. Every training schedule needs recovery time and I have not respected that.
  • I intend to ride 140 km in l’Etape Edmonton. My longest distance thus far on a bike is about 105 km so far. This is going to take a lot of hard work, a lot of training and a lot of dedication. Admittedly, this intention may go against some of the other things I’m intending to do this year. I’m not sure that there is balance when you are doing something as challenging as a 140 km bike race. I will not have time for some other fitness activities. Training for something like this will be akin to my marathon training in 2021 which is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I almost collapsed at my front door with the 105 km ride last year. I’ve already signed up for the race. So this is more of a “I’m going to do this, than I intend to do it.” If something happens and I don’t hit 140 km and have to downgrade my race, I intend to be nice to myself about it.
  • I intend to blog 2 times a month, hopefully on a bi-weekly schedule.
  • I intend to find a way to enjoy golf and have fun without worrying about my score or the results. This will be tough as it also involves other intentions like being nicer to myself and finding balance. My intentions for golf is to really work on my mental game again in 2023. I intend to work hard with my swing coach to reach some consistency and stability in my swing. This could be my toughest intention of the year. Find the fun in golf and keep it fun regardless of results.
  • Of course, I intend to stay sober and enjoy alternative drinks with more mocktails and fancy coffees in 2023!

That’s a lot of intentions in 2023! I’m very excited about what the year might bring. It’s been a very busy start to the year. I’m looking forward to a year full of being nicer to myself, full of gratitude with balance! I’m looking forward to another year of fruitful sharing with you!

How about you? What are your intentions for the year?

Welcome to 2023! I wish nothing but the best to all of my readers.

  1. Another great blog/post Dennis. Enjoy reading your digital journal. I’ll have to give some thought to making a list of my intentions. Number 1 – learn to golf again after 3 years off.
